On Friday, June 9, 2006 Dr. Leo M. Bonaventura became the first physician in the state of Indiana to use the da Vinci ® Surgical System to perform a myomectomy, which is the surgical removal of fibroids from the uterus that maintains the position of the uterus and preserves fertility. The da Vinci® Surgical System provides a minimally invasive surgical option for a variety of procedures, now including the myomectomy, through its robotic technology.
"This technology represents an important treatment option for fibroid removal," said Bonaventura. "By using the da Vinci®, patients experience less discomfort after surgery and greatly reduce their recovery period with a hospital stay of only 12 to 24 hours."
The da Vinci® Surgical System consists of a surgeon's console at which the physician controls three or four robotic arms, using 3-D images of the surgical field, to make precise incisions though which the surgical procedure is completed.
The incisions made using the da Vinci ® are typical of those made during minimally invasive surgery. Minimally invasive surgery, also know as laparoscopic or endoscopic surgery, is performed through tiny incisions that allow the surgeon access using precision instruments. Because of reduced trauma to the body, many of these procedures are done on an outpatient basis.
